Ian Hampton's musical career began in the U.K. as a member of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Academy of St. Martin's in the Fields. He moved to Canada in 1966, becoming principal cellist of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the CBC Radio Orchestra. He was also cellist of the Purcell String Quartet for twenty years, which, under the auspices of SFU toured B.C., Canada, and internationally. Latterly he was principal cellist for the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and Personnel Manager for that orchestra as well as the CBC Radio Orchestra.
He has been closely associated with the Langley Community Music School for thirty years where he is Artistic Director Emeritus and a member of the faculty. In 1999, Ian was a recipient of the B.C. Arts Council award for his extraordinary contribution as a performer, teacher, and administrator.
